Prepping For The New Year

Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve….what the heck?! Even though 2020 was definitely a year for the books (literally), all in all it really went fast in my opinion! It’s already time to gear up for the New Year! Today on the blog I want to go through what I’m doing to begin 2021 on the right foot. I’ll show you how I’m setting goals and what goals I’m setting to hopefully inspire you to make some of your own!

First off, does January 1 mean a breath of fresh air or is it just another day in your opinion? For me, I love the idea of a breath of fresh air. Whether you want to call them resolutions, goals, or new ways of living, I think it’s important to have “goals” to work toward. Do you? As a very goal oriented type of person, I personally love the fresh start a new year brings!

Though, I don’t necessarily think that you have to wait until Jan 1 to start taking action. ANY day is a fresh start. Any new morning, hour, minute can mean the start of something new for you. If you’re reading this on any day but Jan 1, today can be just as fresh and excited as a new year! This, my friends, is exciting. Do you know why? That’s because when we inevitably trickle away from our goals, because nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes every now and then, you GET TO decide that this next hour is your fresh start, and you’re allowed to start right back up where you left off working toward that goal.

If “new year, new me” motivates you, I think that’s great! If it’s daunting, I totally get that. For me, I’m always trying to improve myself in small ways. Big life changing improvements are obviously incredible, but I think that often it’s the small ones that eventually turn into the massive improvements that feel the most worthwhile. So, whether you are looking to up your fitness, get healthier, read more, be more kind, or just be a more tidy person there’s no better time than now to get clear on what you need to focus on!

What I’m Doing:

First off, I’m a huge fan of journaling. It was SO HARD for me to get into it (literally took me like 2 years) but now that I’ve made it a habit, it’s where I find the most clarity. I like to journal about what exactly I’m leaving behind in the past, and what exactly I want to improve on. If you’re not a journal type of gal, I challenge you to try it today! Here is a little snippet of what I wrote this morning in my journal:

What I want to keep from 2020

  • Spontaneity

  • Flexibility - (in blogging, in fitness, etc)

  • My morning routine

  • Rest

What I want to improve on in 2021:

  • Intentional days

  • Confidence (in my decisions, let go of fomo, in blogging, etc)

  • Running

  • Intentional rest

  • Not being so hard on myself

It’s not an exhaustive list, but it’s a glimpse into what helped me pinpoint WHAT I’m actually working toward. In this blog, all about how to make actionable goals you’re more likely to accomplish, and here I talk about how I break down goals so that every area of life can be improved where you need it to be. This is my favorite way to do a little life audit and find exactly what needs improvement.

My January 2021 Goals:

A few of the specific goals I’m working toward are:

  • Run 5 miles per week - I used to run ALL the time and loved the runners high. I’ve recently got away from it and would love to get back.

  • Floss daily (lol)

  • One touch method - it’s a way of tidying as you go throughout your day. For example if you sit on the couch and move the pillow, as soon as you get up put it back. Or, if you make a smoothie, as soon as you’re done wash the blender.

Then, on January 31 I’d like to look back and see how I’ve done with those goals, and make new ones or adjust for February!

They’re actually pretty small goals, but I find that those are the ones that help me with the bigger goals in the long run! What do you think? I’d love to hear what you’re working on this year too!
