How To Goal Set For Success

Summer is almost over, (tears, serious tears), but I am simultaneously really stinking excited for fall!! Also, quick side note as I write this, babe and I are a military couple and we’re finding out where we’re moving to at the end of the year any day now, so is fall even in my future? Lord knows. What country will I live in? Lord knows. Am I hella excited about it? I know, absotively. Jesus take the wheel nah what I’m sayin’? For all my sisters going through a change right now not lovin’ change, 2019 has made me an expert. We’re talking moving to state I’ve never been to, moving in with babe when we spent the entirety of our relationship cross country, going through big business ventures, getting married, and moving possibly across the pond to Europe, Asia, or somewhere else in the states...yep, I know what I’m doin’ in the realm of change, friends. Never hesitate to reach out for support or guidance, I am always here for you. 

Anywho, fall. Fall is fun. Along with fall comes the close of summer that may have included a few too many ice cream cones (is there a such thing?), a loss of motivation or routine, and frankly just the need to get yourself feeling back together headed toward the very best version of you. 

To help you out and find your big juicy, life improving goals, I wanted to share with you the framework that we use in my 6-week e-course, Thrive: Food, Fitness, and Life. It is a goal setting framework that is proven and used by numerous professionals called SMART goal setting. I know, punny. 

SMART goals are:

  • Specific

    Is it detailed enough? For example, “I want to feel better,” okay well what does that mean? Do you want to sleep 8 hours a night 6/7 days a week? Do you want to lose 20 pounds? Do you want to figure out what is causing your bloating? Do you want to feel aligned with your life purpose? Do you want to grab ahold of your anxiety? Are you pickin’ up what I’m layin’ down? 

  • Measurable

    How will you know when you’ve achieved it? Can you create some sort of measure that you can track as time passes? 

  • Attainable

    Is it realistic in your lifestyle? For example, if your goal is to run a marathon and your training requires 4 hours per day to run, but you’re currently in the middle of busy season at work where you work 14-15 hour days 6 days a’re setting yourself up for failure. I’m not saying give up entirely, I’m saying what is something else that will bring you the same feeling of accomplishment and pride? And bring on the marathon training in a few months after busy season! 

  • Relevant

    Is the goal actually relevant to you? This one is my favorite. For example, say your goal is to lose 20 pounds, great. But why? Is it actually the 20 pounds? Or how will losing the amount of weight you feel you need to, to reach the feeling you are going for change your life? Maybe your goal is actually to have the energy to come home and play a game with your husband, or cook a really yummy fun dinner. Maybe you think the 20 pounds will give you more confidence to stand up for what you believe in, to start dating again, etc. That is your actual goal, not the pounds lost. You’re still going to lose the weight, you just have a stronger alignment, purpose, and motivation to do it. 

  • Timely

    Is it realistic in the timeframe given? For example, losing 40 pounds in 2 weeks is not healthy and not timely. Learning to speak French in a month is not realistic. Obviously, these are extreme examples, but be sure that your goal is timely, and if not, make an adjustment. 

After setting your SMART goals, creating a plan of action, and finding the support and accountability you feel you need are the keys to your success my friend!
