Your Capri Travel Guide - where to stay, eat, and play
This summer our friends decided to make the trek out to Italy to visit us. We were trying to think of where we could take them that we both hadn’t been yet, that would also provide an “iconic Italy” experience. We thought about other cities along the Amalfi Coast like Ravello or Praiano, Portofino, or even another trip to Puglia since it’s so large we weren’t able to visit every city on our last trip. We finally decided on the perfect decision - Capri!
Capri is an island along the Amalfi Coast, known for its gorgeous rock structures, charming old town, and swanky hotels, restaurants, and boutiques.
Given we spent a lot of time just catching up with our friends, and it’s a bit more of a laid back environment in terms of activities, I thought I’d just give you the places we went to and loved, and a few more I’d saved earlier but we didn’t get to as opposed to my usual itinerary style format.
I wrote all about our last trip to the Amalfi Coast here, when we stayed in Positano for four days and I give you the full play by play itinerary! Since we were only there for a long weekend that time we weren’t able to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum, the historic archaeological sites that were buried under ash after the notorious eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Both my husband and friend Danny were really interested in visiting, so it was the perfect addition to our island getaway. We decided to stay in Naples for our first night to be able to get up early for a morning tour of Pompeii.
We arrived in the city of Naples in the afternoon, with just enough time to drop off our bags at the hotel before grabbing a spritz at Barrio Botanico, a fun cocktail bar with an outdoor atmosphere. We then wandered the city sites in the center of town before heading to grab a pizza of course!
Naples is the birthplace of the iconic Italian pizza, the Neapolitan pizza. There are so many pizzerias to choose from, but we went to La Lazzara Trattoria e Pizzeria and really enjoyed it.
The next day we took this tour of Pompeii which I found through Airbnb. Our guide was really passionate and knowledgeable about everything he was showing us, which made for a really great experience. I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a Pompeii tour. We took the train right from Naples to the archaeological site (about 1 hour each way).
We then took the ferry from Naples right to Capri! It only takes about 45 minutes to get to and from. We booked our ferry tickets here.
Originally, our plan was to take the ferry to Positano the following day so that our friends would be able to see the iconic scene of Positano. But, after the past two days we’d decided we’d been on too many methods of transportation and just weren’t feeling up to the ferry traveling to and from the mainland! So we’d decided to take this day to explore the island of Capri instead. Between this day and the next full day we’d explored a good portion of the main island of Capri, and went to a gorgeous beach club for a day in Anacapri.
So here is everything we did in Capri that we loved:
What to do:
Shop for ceramics, linen, handmade shoes, and more in the old town.
Hike/walk to Belvedere di Punta Cannone, Grotta Albergo dei Marinai, Faraglione di Terra and Belvedere del Pizzolungo for some spectacular views.
Head to a beach club for the day. We chose Lido del Faro and really loved it. The decor was gorgeous and the view was unobstructed for any of their beach chairs making for a really relaxing and gorgeous experience. Their restaurant and bar was also really great!
I had also booked this sunset cruise that unfortunately for us was cancelled last minute due to weather! But I think a boat ride is definitely a must during your stay. When we stayed in Positano we used this one and had the absolute best experience.

There are also myriad bars and restaurants to grab a coffee or cocktail and just enjoy the view.

Ristorante Panorama Capri - such a gorgeous view and a really fun atmosphere. Not to mention the food was fantastic.
Al Chiaro del Luna - another beautiful view, and of course great food.
Da Emilia alla Curtiglia - we came here for dinner the night we went to Lido del Faro on Anacapri. It was my favorite restaurant atmosphere of the trip and a must do in my opinion.
Jacky Bar was a really cute atmosphere for cocktails as well.
Other restaurants I had saved we didn’t get a chance to visit:
Da Paolino - an famous Capri restaurant known for it’s lemon ceiling
We only had two full days on the island, but you could easily spend 4 or 5 if you take in a few beach clubs, more shopping, and a boat day.
We stayed at Villa Helios and it was just perfect. It had a gorgeous view from the balcony, and was right on the edge of the center of town so it was an easy walk to nearly anything!
After our few days in Capri we headed back to Naples to catch the train to Roma! I wrote a full Rome travel guide here when we visited during 2020. I only have one addition, you MUST visit Trattoria Trittone 1884 and get the carbonara. You simply must!!
