Guest Blog of the Month - Emily Shinavier
"You can tell who the strong women are. They're the ones you see building up one another instead of tearing each other down." Alright ladies, you all know the drill. It's time this month to shed some light on another incredible, inspiring lady! This month, the boss babe and plant based (mostly, balance right?) queen Emily Shinavier!
+ If you could have lunch with anybody, who would it be and why?
Number one on my list right now would have to be Joanna Gaines. She is just life goals. I remember hearing about her story a few years ago and being very humbled by her initial life experiences prior to HGTV fame and stardom. I would love to ask her some life and business advice. Oh, and maybe if she can come help me with my future renovation projects happening in 2019.... stay tuned ;)
+ Tell us a little bit about yourself! Where are you from, what is your favorite thing to do in your free time, and one random fact about you?!
I was born in Texas, raised in Michigan, and currently live in the great state of Tennessee. Nashville, TN to be specific. And yes, it is as great as everyone says it is here.
In my free time, I love to go to live music venues and RELAX. I find myself constantly working on new projects and exciting ideas, so when I give myself a break I like to get lost in music and happy environments.
One random fact about me.... showed cows (yes, cows... moo) at my local 4H fair growing up, and was our Grand Champion Showman a few years in a row.
+ What got you into the health and wellness industry? I know you've gone through quite the journey yourself and so many women can relate. Could you tell us a little bit about that?
I've truly always had a passion for helping others, and for exercise and nutrition.
But growing up I really struggled with my body image. I remember one specific day coming home from school in third grade, and standing in the mirror with my shirt lifted up, questioning why I wasn't "skinny" like all of my friends were. From that day forward my self image and confidence was an issue. I tried every diet under the sun. I would go days without eating only to find myself binging on pizza and cupcakes for weeks afterward just to make up for lost time. I even made up a "lettuce diet" in high school and tried surviving on alcohol and bosco sticks alone for a short period in college. Don't ask lol.
Eventually, my unhealthy relationship with diet, exercise, and most importantly my self confidence led me to a thrown out back and period of physical therapy to rehabilitate it. During this time I decided to really start focusing on small, simple, healthy changes. I started doing research, eating real whole foods, and making slow steady progress on my self confidence and mindset.
Once I started seeing positive results and realized they were healthy and sustainable, I wanted to share what I had learned with anyone and everyone that I could. I pray that no one has to struggle finding health and balance the way that I did.
+ What was the key component that helped you find your healthy lifestyle and a loving relationship with food and your body?
I hit a breaking point and realized that in order to make changes in my body I had to make changes in my mindset and my outlook on "healthy" and redefine what that truly meant to me.
+ If you could share one thing to help other women looking to not only improve their health and fitness, but their self-love too, what would it be?
Your journey is just that, a journey. There are going to be periods of time where you feel in complete and total alignment, and other times where you question who you are and what you're doing. And that's okay. Actually, that's more than okay. It's human.
Take each day, each meal, and each choice one at a time and ask yourself "will this get me one step closer or one step further from my goal?"
+ What is your favorite type of workout?
I absolutely love HIIT training with weights. Lately I've been incorporating a lot of TRX into my workouts too!
+ If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Summer squash grown in my parents garden, hands down. It is SO good.
+ What is the most unique workout you've ever done?!
I did a strength and yoga flow on top of a building in Nashville, that was pretty cool!
+ What is your favorite quote to live by?
"The easiest way to predict the future is to create it."
+ Where can everyone find you? (social media)
I just love doing these posts. How empowering to see that every woman's path is different, yet its perfect for them. Don't be afraid to take risks, try new things, and be authentically you. You just might find yourself living your absolute best life.
