Guest Blog of the Month - Crunches then Cocktails' Justine Sloan

"You can tell who the strong women are. They're the ones you see building up one another instead of tearing each other down." This quote is so important to me. If it weren't for the group of incredible uplifting women I have around me I'm not sure I'd even be close to where I am today. I had the idea of interviewing women that I admire or know are authentic inspiring human beings. So about once per month I am going to aim to interview someone who I know will help YOU become the woman you want to be.

First up, my coaching friend Justine Sloan. Her brand name is "crunches then cocktails," how cute is that?! She is just as beautiful inside as she is outside and I am so excited to introduce you to her tribe.

Me: Tell us a little bit about yourself! Where are you from, what is your favorite thing to do in your free time, and what is one random fact about you?!

Justine: My name is Justine Sloan (formerly Justine Moore… I married my soul mate this past March) and I’m a former fitness model and competitor turned health coach + self love advocate! I was born and raised in Wisconsin, then moved to New York when I was 18 to attend college. Out in New York my fitness career took off, so I spent a total of 9 years living there before I moved back to my home state in 2014. I live in downtown Milwaukee now and absolutely love it here! Leaving home makes you appreciate it so much more!

Favorite thing to do… oh geez, if we’re being honest? Eat great food and drink great drinks with great people. I love to travel, read, and take classes at Pure Barre and CycleBar. It’s crazy, I used to hate working out, and now it’s something I genuinely enjoy so much.

Me: What got you into the health and wellness industry? I know you have quite the history with dieting and difficult relationships with food and your body and i know there are so many women who relate to your story. Could you tell us a little bit about that?

Justine: Oh boy, yes. How much time do you have?? Haha. Growing up I was a chubby kid and at 8 years old I was crying to my Mom about being “fat.”From that point on I was constantly struggling with food and body image, and spent the next 2decades of my life yo-yo dieting. My obsession with getting the “perfect body” is what led me into fitness. While attending college I got certified as a personal trainer and began working with clients. Shortly after that I decided to compete in my first figure competition… which led to 19 shows in 4 years, countless photo shoots and lucrative endorsement contracts. From the outside it looked like I was living the dream, but I was miserable, abusing my body and had debilitating anxiety. In 2014 my world came crashing down when I was hit with severe adrenal fatigue and thyroid dysfunction. I had no choice but to step away from competing and fitness modeling, which ended up being the hugest blessing in disguise. (God’s plan, right?!)

That was the year I moved home and started taking care of myself- body, mind and soul. Piece by piece I started finding a happy, healthy balance with food and exercise, and was able to make peace with my body. (Still a work in progress, and probably always will be, but I’m tremendously grateful for how far I’ve come!)

Me: What was the key component that helped you find your healthy lifestyle and a loving relationship with food and your body?

Justine: Approaching it with a sense of love, and focusing on HEALTH first, instead of trying to be skinnier.

There’s a saying I love: “Treat your body like someone you LOVE lives in it.” When we’re truly focused on taking care of ourselves from a place of love, everything changes.

Me: If you could share one thing to help other women experiencing something similar to your past, what would it be?

Justine: Don’t waste your precious life hating your body! I look back on so many memories where I wouldn’t let myself be happy and truly LIVE because I was so caught up in food and body B.S. Do the inner work, and the results will follow. Working on my inner healing has been the most important thing I’ve ever done (and ever WILL do) in my life.

Me: What is your favorite type of workout?

Justine: Pure Barre and CycleBar! Never in a million years would I have thought I’d like barre fitness classes, but a friend invited me to try it and now I am hooked for life!

Me: I know you're a happy hour connoisseur, what is your go-to drink for happy hour?

Justine: I’m a walking talking Wisconsin stereotype because I LOVE my beer! Hoppy IPA’s are my favorite! I also love a cucumber jalepeno margarita (if you haven’t had one, you NEED to), and bubbles (champagne, prosecco, cava)!!

Me: What is the most unique workout you've ever done?!

Justine: I took a pole fitness class in New York and it was super hard! You need some major upper body strength to flip around a pole!

Me: If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Justine: Oh gosh. This is hard… but I have to say tacos. Tacos are life.


Our common denominator? Self love. Approach health, fitness, and your body with the point of view of the health of your mind, body, and soul and everything changes. Your life will truly transform.
