June Guest Blog of the Month - Jo Johnson
Friends. I found Jo Johnson on the handy dandy Instagram app earlier this year. Jo is a photographer and not only does she take the CUTEST wedding photos, but she herself is the cutest. I know, she's great.
This girl RADIATES happiness, confidence, and positivity. Body positive, seeing the glass half full, and knowing that the grass is greener where you water it are just a few of the messages I feel when I look at her page.
A few days ago I wrote an Instagram post (read it here!) about how amazing it would be of people would flood their Instagram feeds with things that made them feel GOOD about themselves, and we reduced the comparison game just a smidgen (or a lot). Well, everyone would be flooding their feed with Jo if this were the case.
I knew I had to hear her story and get it on the blog for you all in hopes that some of her overflowing positivity and confidence rubs off on you too!
+ If you could have lunch with anybody, who would it be and why?
Ice Cube. I know it seems random but I'm totally obsessed with him. We have the same birthday and I just think it's so cool the way he paved the way for an entire group of people to pursue their dreams.
I mean why not have lunch with Ice Cube?!
+ Tell us a little bit about yourself! Where are you from, what is your favorite thing to do in your free time, and one random fact about you?
I'm originally from Missouri but landed in Northwest Arkansas for college. I've never looked back. I absolutely love where I live and spend most of my free time trying to convince friends from all over the country to move here. It's seriously the best. I just got married a few weeks ago to my high school sweetheart after dating for almost ten years and we're in the process of building a new house together! Life is happening and I'm learning your twenties are absolute chaos so I'm just trying to hang on and find joy in the journey. Also, we have a dog named Boji that our life revolves around.
Chaos, yes. Enjoy the ride, heck yes. Boji, so cute!
+ What got you interested in health and wellness? I know so many women can relate to you and your journey to confidence. Could you tell us a little bit about that?
The primary thing that has brought me living healthier is finding happiness. I find that when I make healthier choices, I feel better and when I feel better, I am happier. Seems simple when you say it but it took me years to realize it. As for finding confidence in myself...I think that's something I'm still learning about. I've found that you can't find your security in other people. You need to love you, first and foremost. Also, learning to forgive yourself for the mistakes you make (because we all make mistakes) is so darn important. I'm over feeling guilty over decisions I can't change and the only way to stop doing that is to let it go and try you darnedest to do better moving forward.
YES! When you make healthier choices, you feel better, when you feel better, you're happier. Say that again!! Nobody is perfect. As long as we're learning and growing, we're winning.
+ What was the key component that helped you find your healthy lifestyle and a loving relationship with food and your body?
I don't enjoy cooking at all and it has made the journey to fueling my body difficult. I much prefer to get some takeout and spend my time focused on other endeavors but I'm actively working on changing that. I don't think that a loving relationship with food and your body is a destination, I think its a never ending journey that goes through ups and downs. This year I've been focusing on eating out less, cooking more, and finding joy in the meals I'm able to cook for myself. As for finding happiness in my body, I have always been able to focus on what my body can do over what my body looks like. My mom has MS and has been wheelchair bound for a lot of my life. Seeing someone you love not have the ability to use their body changes your relationship with your own body and focusing on function of aesthetics changes everything.
That is so so powerful. It as absolutely not a destination but a process. Seeing your body as a vessel to fuel happiness and your purpose is SO much more powerful than just aesthetics. Amen sister, I'm sure your mom is so so proud.
+ If you could share one thing to help other women looking to not only improve their health and fitness, but their self-love too, what would it be?
Everyone has insecurities and it's okay to have off days. Don't let those moments pull you down, instead let them happen and then keep moving forward toward your goal! Life is a big game of two steps forward, one step back and that's the beauty of it!! Just don't stop moving forward because of the occasional step back.
Y'all need to go read that again.
+ What is your favorite type of workout?
I love to get in the pool and swim! It's rhythmic and peaceful, calms down my mind. I am also an avid yogi. It is great for building strength and flexibility but also getting your mind in the right state.
LOVE swimming! Yoga for the mind, YES. Although me and yoga don't get along very well. Except maybe shavasana.
+ If you could eat only one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?
SUSHI! For sure, sushi!
+ What is the most unique workout you've ever done?!
Probably paddle board yoga! My husband and I ended up buying a paddle board just so we could practice on our own time at the lake!
So fun! Can I come over?!
+ What is your favorite quote to live by?
When you focus on the good the good gets better :)
Ugh. Tattooing that on my forehead right now. YES.
+ Where can everyone find you?
Now go follow her and flood yourself with some happiness and positivity!
